While Columbus Day traditionally honors the significance of Europeans “discovering” the Americas, Indigenous Peoples' Day honors the heritage and contributions of indigenous/Native Americans who inhabited these lands long before the arrival of Europeans. Part 1: Decolonial/Health-Conscious Cooking Demonstration Noon–12:30 p.m. This demonstration will feature a recipe from the cookbook Decolonize Your Diet: Plant-Based Mexican-American Recipes for Health and Healing (2015 International Latino Book Award for Best Cookbook) by Luz Calvo and Catriona Rueda Esquibel. Part 2: Panel Discussion/Plática: "Indigenous/Xicanx Healing Practices During Times of Crisis" 12:30-1:30 p.m. During this time of collective physical, emotional, and financial crisis, ethnic minorities including Indigenous and Latinx/Chicanx communities are being negatively affected at a significantly higher rate.
